Artist Statement

My body of work stems from my own feelings and personal life experiences. Born in Post Soviet Belarus, I found myself longing for change. The move to the US to pursue my education seemed to be a reasonable solution. However, being an immigrant evoked feelings of alienation and lead to a personal fascination with the human psyche. This new experience made me especially sensitive to the complex relationship between personal identity and the larger social environment.

As a reaction to globalization, the human figure is a central part of my work. Its uniqueness, individuality, power, and vulnerability reveal the true beauty that lies in our differences. Recognition, acceptance, and celebration of those differences are purposefully emphasized in my work. In an attempt to embrace relevant issues such as the construction of identity, I turn to contemporary figurative realism. Peculiar poses of a figure and a muted color palette represent a specific state of mind that exposes raw personality. The oil medium allows the build-up of layers of paint, creating feelings of depth and translucency at the same time. Strong shapes and volumes are balanced out with soft drapery that connects the outer image and the inner emotions of the character. The intention of my artwork is to illustrate my personal belief that only when we come together that the beauty of our differences combines and creates a harmonious symphony.
